The card game known originally as Oh Hell! has seen its name altered in various iterations, often to avoid potential offense. Versions such as Oh Pshaw! and Oh Well! have emerged, while others have opted for more direct alternatives like Oh Shit! Some players refer to the game as Blob or Blackout, likely a nod to the practice of marking a player’s bid on the scoresheet and then obscuring it with a black mark when they fail to achieve the predicted number of tricks.

In many variations, the number of cards dealt to players fluctuates with each round, which has led to regional names such as Elevator (l'Ascenseur in France), Up and Down the River (Australia and New Zealand), and 10 op en neer in the Netherlands. In the UK, it is commonly referred to as Contract Whist or Nomination Whist, while in Australia and New Zealand it is known as Bust. Other names include Boerenbridge in the Netherlands and German Bridge in Hong Kong. In India, the game is called Kachuful (in Gujarati), a mnemonic for remembering the cycling order of trump suits: Kari (spades), Chukat (diamonds), Falli (clubs), and Lal (hearts).

Kachuful can be played offline at various locations, allowing for engaging competition against strong AI opponents. The aesthetics of the game are enhanced by classy graphics and smooth gameplay across tables designed for Kachuful.

The objective of Kachuful is for each player to predict the number of tricks they can win in each hand, aiming to take precisely that many tricks. Players earn points only for achieving their exact bid, while failing to do so results in point deductions, either from overbidding or underbidding.

In basic gameplay, a player who successfully bids and wins the exact number of tricks scores 10 points plus the number of tricks bid (10 points for zero tricks, 11 for one trick, 12 for two tricks, etc.). Conversely, players who end up winning more or fewer tricks than they predicted score no points. This scoring process simplifies tracking for the scorekeeper, who merely needs to note successful bids with a "1" and cross out unsuccessful ones.

The scoring system employed is often referred to as Blackout or Blob due to the visual representation on the score sheet. Unsuccessful bids are marked out, creating black blobs that represent missed attempts.
